Charged
with the mission to preserve undeveloped ridgelines and scenic
corridors in the greater Ross Valley, the San Anselmo Open
Space Committee has actively worked to preserve 52 acres since
its inception in 1981. Starting with just a 1/4 acre parcel,
the Town purchased Kite Hill, which stands at the highest
elevation in San Anselmo. Since 1993, this group has worked
diligently with the Town of San Anselmo and other environmental
agencies (such as the Marin County Open Space District) and
neighborhood groups to purchase the Bald Hill Ridge Preserve
(30 acres) and Hawthorne Canyon (22 acres) for a total purchase
price of $1,605,000. The Committee, acting as an advocate
and promoter of open space, has been instrumental in raising
over 95% of this total price in the form of seed money and
matching grants.
The Committee consists of a group of eleven volunteers who
are appointed by the San Anselmo Town Council. Its mandate
is to fulfill the Open Space Element of the General Plan --
to save designated greenbelts in the Ross Valley from development.
There are 400 acres of such designated parcels, 30 percent
of which have been lost in the past 22 years. However, the
most prominent and important parcels, such as the 60 acres
of majestic Bald Hill's summit in Ross, and portions of the
Red Hill Ridgeline, are still held in private hands and remain
a key part of the greenbelt plan. For more information about
the Committee's current and past projects, click Projects.
